How to Send Photos Without Losing Quality to Compression

Send the original photo, not a compressed preview

Messaging and social platforms often optimize images for fast viewing. That can reduce resolution, remove detail, or change metadata. The result may look fine in a chat but disappoint when printed, edited, archived, or delivered to a client.

To preserve quality, transfer the original image file. With Drop, pair the phone and computer browsers, choose the image from the phone’s file or photo picker, and receive the file on the computer without posting it to a conversation or social feed.

Transfer original photos

• Open drop.cs7.uk on the receiving computer.
• Scan the QR code with the phone.
• Select the original images from Photos, Gallery, Files, or Downloads.
• Keep both devices awake while they transfer.
• Open the received images and confirm their dimensions and file sizes.
• End the private session.

For a large photo set, send several smaller batches. This makes progress easier to verify and reduces memory pressure on the browser.

Check whether the original arrived

Compare the filename, pixel dimensions, format, and approximate file size with the source. A tiny received file is a sign that the source application exported a preview. On some phones, selecting from a Files view makes it clearer which exact file is being sent.

Original-quality transfer matters for printing, professional photography, design work, property listings, product images, medical or inspection records, and any workflow that requires zooming into fine detail. It also avoids filling a chat with personal images merely to move them between your own devices.

Understand format compatibility

An iPhone may store photos as HEIC, while older Windows software expects JPEG. Drop transfers the selected file rather than promising format conversion. If the receiving application cannot open it, use a trusted local conversion tool or change the camera compatibility setting for future photos. Preserve the original until you verify the converted copy.
