Send a large file without uploading it to the cloud

Email attachments have strict size limits. Cloud drives accept larger files, but you must upload the entire item, set sharing permissions, wait for another download, and remember to remove the stored copy later. If both devices are present at the same time, a direct browser transfer can shorten the route.

Open Drop on one device, pair the second device using the QR code, and select the large file. Drop attempts to move the bytes directly between the browsers instead of storing them on the service.

Before starting

• Connect both devices to reliable power or ensure their batteries are charged.
• Use a stable network and disable sleep temporarily if appropriate.
• Close applications that consume substantial memory.
• Confirm that the receiving device has enough disk space.
• Keep both browser pages open until completion.

Large transfers are more sensitive to interruptions. If either device sleeps, changes networks, closes the tab, or loses connectivity, you may need to start again.

When direct transfer is a good fit

It works best when the sender and receiver are both online, nearby, and able to keep the session open. Examples include moving a video from phone to laptop, copying a design export to another workstation, or sending a presentation to a meeting-room computer.

It is less suitable when the recipient is offline or needs a permanent download link. In that situation, an approved cloud-storage service may be the correct tool.

Privacy and storage

Drop uses WebRTC encryption for transport and is designed not to receive or store file contents. Temporary signalling data helps the browsers find each other and expires automatically. The receiving device will still hold the downloaded file, so handle it according to your organization’s rules.

Improve the chance of success

For extremely large folders, divide the transfer into logical groups. Start with one representative file to confirm the connection. Avoid guest, school, or corporate networks that block peer-to-peer connections; a trusted home network or personal hotspot may work better.
