How to Transfer Files Safely on a Hotel or Public Computer

Move a boarding pass, presentation, PDF, or document to a hotel business-centre or public PC while minimizing account exposure and cleaning up afterward.

Use a public computer without handing it your account

Hotel business centres and public computers can solve an urgent problem: printing a boarding pass, opening a presentation, or sending a document. The risk begins when retrieving that file requires access to an entire personal inbox or cloud drive.

Instead, prepare the file on your phone and transfer only that item through a temporary paired-browser session. Open Drop on the public computer, scan its QR code, and select the file on your phone.

Public-computer checklist

  • Look for obvious signs of tampering and avoid machines that behave unexpectedly.
  • Never perform banking, password changes, or sensitive identity work on an untrusted PC.
  • Avoid entering personal email, messaging, Apple, Google, or Microsoft credentials.
  • Transfer the minimum number of files required.
  • Stay with the computer throughout the task.
  • Remove downloads and printed waste afterward.
  • End the Drop session before leaving.

A direct transfer reduces account exposure, but it cannot detect keyloggers, screen recorders, remote support tools, or malware on the computer. Highly sensitive work should wait for a trusted device.

Why logging out may not be enough

Even a careful logout can leave downloads, recent-file entries, cached previews, printer queues, browser autofill suggestions, or notification content. A rushed traveller may also close the window without ending the session. Not entering the account credentials in the first place removes several of these risks.

Prepare travel documents in advance

Before travelling, save offline copies of tickets, reservations, visas, insurance information, and presentations on a trusted phone or laptop. Use clear filenames and PDF exports. Redact unnecessary personal information from any version intended for printing.

Network limitations

Hotel guest networks sometimes isolate devices or block peer-to-peer connections. If Drop cannot establish a route, use an approved alternative rather than attempting to bypass network controls. The hotel’s staffed business centre may offer a managed print service where you can send a limited document.

Minimize exposure

The safest public-computer session is a narrow one. Transfer the specific file, finish the task, remove the local copy, collect every printed page, and leave without ever opening the accounts that hold the rest of your digital life.

Move the file, not your account.

Use Drop to transfer directly between two browsers without signing into email or personal cloud storage on the other device.
